Films with great gore abound, for example Jason X, with the audience just waiting for the next gruesome killing to end the tedium in between. The feel of the movie is similar to Dog Soldiers but with women.
This tense thriller is a terrifying chronicle of six young women who explore caves in the Appalachian Mountains and find unspeakable horror thousands of feet down. Two strangers, who awaken in a room with no recollection of how they got there, soon discover they're pawns in a deadly game perpetrated by a notorious serial killer. With a basically UK cast, with a variety of UK/Irish accents it would have seemed more logical to set it in Scotland which is where it feels like it was filmed, but that is a minor comment. And things really go downhill for all of them, as creatures are present in the cave, and those creatures are hungry. The jump scares in this are well times and not over used, the character development is superb - you really get to like the characters. Also, a good reminder that things that live in caves can venture outside of caves. What a pleasant surprise i received watching this little Horror gem :) 5 girls descend on a claustrophobic underground cave system in the mountains for a reunion of types....only to be stalked by grisly little creatures who are blind but hungry :P Each girl is picked off one by one until the gripping finale....which was exciting & well thought out....The gore scenes were well constructed & the tension build up well paced...A superb performance by all actors ...particularly Juno & Shauna Macdonald....This Horror goes into my favourites box & will receive many further viewings...A must-see for any bona-fide Horror fan... :D Freshen up your watchlist with Prime Video’s latest roster of movies and TV shows, featuring Want to share IMDb's rating on your own site? There are a couple of hokey false alarms before his heroines find themselves trapped in an unexplored cave system, but the first two thirds are a pretty good survival story in their own right, making you wonder if he really needs to give the gals company down there: big mistake, because when they finally do meet the locals, the film shifts into high gear that makes Cameron and Sigourney look like wimps. Will the group of women make it out alive? Do yourself a favor and go watch a movie that actually has a well executed plot.

Which is a shame for those of you Stateside, because that's not the ending you'll be seeing when the film opens there late Summer (apparently it's only the last minute that's been cut, but that's enough to leave you with the standard one-size-fits-all horror movie ending). Still, I suppose we should be grateful at least that Lion's Gate haven't retitled it Mountain-Pick Chicks in the Cannibal Cave of Death. The original version ends ambiguously, but the American Cut removes the final scene, ending it on a cheap, non-sense jump scare. Six months after the rage virus was inflicted on the population of Great Britain, the US Army helps to secure a small area of London for the survivors to repopulate and start again. It's about a group of female characters, who go on a caving expedition.
Excellent film though and descent 2 as well Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin, where they get more than they bargained for, discovering the truth behind the cabin in the woods.

Caves are fun to explore and can be very creepy, especially with lights out - they chose a great setting for this movie.

And once the girls are down there, oh man! However, The Descent keeps you at the edge of your seat throughout, struggling for breath as you feel the walls in the cinema closing in. You will realise how good it is when you start to feel uneasy even before the cave is reached! I even did it during group meetings (only sitting on the floor instead of a chair) as a phD candidate in geophysics at the University of California, Berkeley. One year later she goes hiking with her friends and they get trapped in the cave. Was good I guess back in 2005, but not in today's 2020 standards.
